The Management of Convergence Telecomunications in the New Environment by James P. Heatherly,

The Management of Convergence Telecomunications in the New Environment by James P. Heatherly,
Convergent services are just beginning to become available (some examples of services are: Internet services delivered to TV sets via systems like Web TV, e-mail and World Wide Web access via digital TV decoders and mobile telephones; webcasting of radio and TV programming on the Internet; using the Internet for voice telephony, etc.) and are projected to really take off soon. There are currently no books out on telecom management that have this focus on convergence -- and books currently available are horribly dated. Telecommunications, media and IT companies are using the flexibility of technologies to offer services outside their traditional business sectors, increasingly on an international or global scale. The goal of Heatherly's book is to provide coverage of the fundamentals of telecommunications and discuss how to manage these converged systems, giving managers a how-to manual for many of the day-to-day responsibilities they will encounter. The book will provide detailed discussions on systems, network configurations, traffic engineering, integrated voice and data communications, and global communications. It will also provide insight into systems design, specification and implementation, contract development and negotiation, management procedures, and the future of telecommunications.

Meridian Mail - Meridian Mail was one of the earliest all-digital voicemail systems, running on Northern Telecom's (now Nortel) Meridian Norstar digital PBX systems. The combination of the Meridian's power and Meridian Mail's feature set was one of the major drivers that has turned Nortel into the telephony powerhouse it is today.

Digital Command System - Digital Command System (DCS) is an electronic control system for O scale 3-rail model trains and toy trains, developed by MTH Electric Trains as a rival to Lionel's Trainmaster Command Control. It is similar in concept to DCC, the open industry standard used by HO scale and other 2-rail direct current trains.

E-mail art - E-mail art (sometimes called "Electronic Mail Art") is simply any kind of art sent by e-mail. It includes computer graphics, animations, sceensavers, digital scans of artwork in other media, or even ASCII art.

Digital stamp - A digital stamp, in mail or philately, is similar to a conventional postage stamp except it is resident on or in a computer. A digital stamp can typically be downloaded and printed onto envelopes or packages by authorized individuals.

Optical telegraphs and smoke signals The first telegraphs were to reduce the cost of sending a message thirty-fold compared to semaphore. This is useful to government, but too expensive for most commercial uses other than commodity price information. The word telegraph alone generally refers to an electrical telegraph.) It will also provide insight into systems design, specification and implementation, contract development and negotiation, management procedures, and the U.S. The last (Swedish) commercial semaphore link left operation in 1880. Before long distance transmission of written messages without physical transport of letters. There were many experiments with moving pointers, and various electrical encodings. With the invention of the teletypewriter, telegraphic encoding became fully automated. This definition includes recent forms of data transmission such as fax, email, and computer networks in general. Another advance occurred on August 9, 1892, when Thomas Edison received a patent for a two-way telegraph. Before the Internet came into general use, telegraphy messages were known as a telex message.
